Champagne Corks Are Dangerous

I recently heard an anecdote about someone who, while celebrating at a party, opened the champagne bottle without paying attention to where the bottle was pointing.  Additionally, the bottle had been shaken, and the person did not know to hold her hand over the cork.

As a result, the cork flew out of the bottle and hit someone in the eye, across the room.  The person had to be rushed to the emergency room to repair the damage, to save the eyesight.

I repeat this anecdote to illustrate the point that champagne is a more specialised wine.  When uncorking, it is important to remember to keep the cage on until you are ready to place you hand over the cork.  Twist the cork - not the bottle!  Keep the bottle tilted at a 45-degree angle, and for goodness sake - make sure it's not pointing at a person or at anything breakable.

Wines Under $10

Women's Health Magazine sent me a link under the guise of Eat This, Not That, to tell me about some new, inexpensive wines.

The red wines are really tasty, and yes, under $10.  I found the white wines - mostly Reislings and Vinho Verdes, to be trite.  Most reislings listed are very sweet, and in my opinion, do not pair well with food, except for dessert.  Vinho Verdes are light, young wines that are great for summer sipping, and go well with Asian food.   But, there are other under-$10 wines that have more flavor.
